'Idol' alum Ace Young takes his time to get first CD right

Ace Young has again made '' American Idol's'' Top 10.

It's been two years since Young was among the finalists of the Fox-TV show's fifth season. Now, he's on track to release his self-titled debut album on July 15, making him the 10th contestant from that talent-laden year to put out a CD.

That could be daunting, considering the season's winner, Taylor Hicks, and runner-up Katharine McPhee already have been dropped by their record companies.

But Young, 27, says that's exactly why it's taken him so long to get to this point.

'Idol' alum Ace Young's dream is coming true

From Grammys and gold records to college and day jobs, life after American Idol is a mix of the ordinary and the entertaining. In this ninth and final installment, USA TODAY catches up with a former finalist:

It's not quite the American dream, but close enough: Guy goes from selling cellphones upon arrival in L.A. to being hired by the same company to promote the cellphones.

If only the people at Cingular remembered ever having an employee named Ace Young.

Before undertaking a recent meet-and-greet tour for Cingular (in which he also performed acoustic sets across the country), the Season 5 finalist, who finished seventh, had to remind them. "I sold hands-free units and car chargers," he proudly told them.

Those days are gone, but you get the feeling Young, 27, would gladly man a mall kiosk if that were the only way to pay for the kind of music he wants to make. "I'm still a 9-to-5 guy," Young says.
